(Experimental Dept.) Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/AFM{Anthony F. Martindale}1/R.{Sir Henry Royce} 13th September, 1938. 1029. New Hudson Ltd., Icknield Street, BIRMINGHAM. 18. (For the Attention of Mr. Fraser.) Dear Sirs, With further reference to the failure of the adjuster spindle GB.3272, we have examined the new samples you sent us, and enclose a Laboratory report on one of them. We agree that the material and method of manufacture specified in your letter of 25th August are correct, but your Steel Supplier appears to have sent you a thoroughly bad bar. We should be obliged if you would take up the question of composition and heat treatment with your Supplier, and also send fresh samples for examination. It appears that we shall have to examine a certain percentage of your products to guard against such defects, thus increasing our costs: when we make parts here our inspectors reject such steel before fabrication. Yours faithfully, For ROLLS-ROYCE LTD. | ||
