X.3014b. COPY OF LETTER RECEIVED FROM :) THE LUCAS ELECTRICAL COMPANY LTD., WELL STREET, BIRMINGHAM. April 7th 1921. Our ref. CLB/1. Messrs. Rolls-Royce Ltd., Nightingale Road, X.4338 X.3014b. X.4165 Derby. Dear Sirs, For the attention of Mr. Whitehead. We beg to confirm the Writer's visit to your Works on the 5th inst. to discuss the question of electrical equipment more particularly on the 20 h.p. car. Mr. Whitehead explained that there was a certain amount of irritation caused by complaints from one or two quarters of the behaviour of our present equipment on the 40.50 h.p. car. In reply the Writer suggested, and it was agreed that these complaints referred entirely to our electro-Magnetic Cutout and that there were only three such complaints in number during the last three months. The Writer pointed out how thoroughly we appreciated the importance of a perfectly reliable cutout, and to attain this end we have been experimenting for some months resulting in a departure from our conventional practice embodied in a sample left with your Mr. Clark. We confidently believe that this cutout will form a great improvement on the old one and should be absolutely reliable. We await with interest your remarks on the result of your test. Considering our possible business relations in future, the Writer suggested that it was apparent the requirements of your firm in the electrical equipment of the chassis were of a special nature. Particularly so as Mr. Royce himself has very definite ideas on certain features of the set and has frequently been of assistance to us in the past by making helpful observations and criticisms.
