With reference to the remarks yesterday about friction in the steering.

We understand that you agree with us that this friction is desirable and in addition the best results can only be obtained for different conditions by making the quantity of friction available adjustable.

As you will observe, on 12-EX we could only obtain what we require by loading the cross steering balls excessively. Whilst this is permissible for experimental purposes, it will undoubtedly promote undue wear at this point in time.

We have recently taken up with R.{Sir Henry Royce} the question of providing this axle with some form of spring loaded friction. We find that friction depending upon the weight of the car to be entirely unsatisfactory. At the moment however there is no design of any sort for providing spring loaded friction with the new axle.

We consider that it would be of assistance if you could give R.{Sir Henry Royce} your own personal opinion of the results obtained by spring loaded friction in your recent tests.
