To Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} from Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/GWH.{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux} 11/3 Cricklewood. Nov.27th.1936. 35-EX. We are having considerable trouble with the silent tappets on this car, since the alteration to B.side. In my opinion the men were not careful enough in drilling out the plugged holes in the rocker, and foreign matter has got into the bushes which caused binding, with the result that the eccentric bush turns round and opens the valves. They have all been taken off and thoroughly cleaned this morning. Now trouble has started on A.side. We changed over last night from Castrol oil to Artic and it is possible that the thin oil is washing foreign matter off the filter into the tappet system. We are therefore cleaning out the small filter, to cut this possibility out. GWH.{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux} A.{Mr Adams} Phantom III. which came into Cricklewood and stood for a day and a half during the last two days of cold, misfired upon starting up. All the symptoms were valves being held open. It took roughly 10 mins. before the firing was even. This was the reason why I decided to change the oil in 35-EX. as we could not produce the failure on this car and the behaviour with Artic oil was, I thought, necessary. GWH.{George W.
