FRICTION IN THE STEERING OF 20 HP. CAR.

Referring to Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Bml/LG11.2.26, we had hoped to be able to discuss this with R.{Sir Henry Royce} before he went away, but this was not found to be possible at last.

We propose however a to design a spring loaded cross steering tube joint and submit it to R.{Sir Henry Royce} in the ordinary routine. We think however there will be some difficulty in getting the very high load that you apparently ask for in order to give you a satisfactory friction.

In this connection we suppose you are proceeding with the experiment consisting of the friction plates in the pivot with a load varied by a spring, which you will remember has the advantage of retaining most of its friction when the wheel is off the ground. If this was found to help in any way we feel sure that it would be more acceptable than ball joints with very spring loads. We should no doubt still continue the spring loaded ball joints, but the loads would be moderate.
