X3993 Referring to your Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}1/LG2/7/26, with the numerous experimental chassis going through from time to time, it is difficult for us to know how far they have developed. Our great object is to save R's time in reading or writing correspondence. For that reason we asked for information from W. before writing to R.{Sir Henry Royce} R.{Sir Henry Royce} mentioned to me the other day that he was anxious to avoid WW going to unnecessary trouble in designing chassis which eventually might not be approved by Sales officials, who know what customers require and what they do not require. For this reason I asked Sales officials to remark upon EAC IX in order to prevent development on lines which might be unsatisfactory to customers. It is, often [handwritten above a crossed-out word] desirable that Sales officials should criticize the designs of chassis in the early stages, as R.{Sir Henry Royce} appreciates any helpful criticism which may prevent unnecessary work. Our main object is to try to assist R.{Sir Henry Royce} to produce the maximum useful designs in his limited time, and prevent his having to make alterations later which might have been prevented had they been dealt with in the earlier stages. I will communicate with R.{Sir Henry Royce} in regard to these criticisms as far as I find it desirable. We had already discussed at some length many weeks ago with R.{Sir Henry Royce} the desirability of having a lower chassis and we are glad that he is now able to accomplish this. BJ. | ||
