Steam Valve for Phantom III Production.

Referring to your memo Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}14/KW.24.2.36, I do not agree with your remarks, and do not think you have given sufficient weight to other important features of the system.

The Camel valve detached from the problems surrounding its application is simple enough, but if used in its present form will not drain, and would inevitably be damaged by a freeze-up. We must not depend on non-freeze coolant. The position of the Phantom III valve completely avoids this difficulty, and is purposely arranged in the form of a steam dome at the highest point inside the dummy filler to form a steam separator, and avoid loss of water under steaming conditions. In this respect it should be superior to any form of outlet at a lower level. If we have not been completely successful with it up till now it is because the conditions are not yet right, and the horn pipes on the radiator tank inlets should do much to cure this.

This scheme also avoids accumulation loss which would result from a low position of the steam valve.

With regard to the filler, the camel valve also demands the provision of a suction release for which on Phantom III we have provided a simple ball valve.

If anybody wants to criticise the Phantom III scheme on the score of complication and cost we are prepared to argue the point.
