X. 4291. RE. DIMMER SWITCH - GOSHAWK 11. X.

Replying to your BJ6/H171022., we may say that Mr. Royce has agreed to our making a design for dipping head lamps on Goshawk consisting of the lamp brackets and operating gear, and this will be availavle in a few days time.

We think that with the large driving wing lights it is useless to dim the head lamps as the former are very dazzling themselves, and should be sufficient to drive with if they are any more value than the ordinary wing lamps. The head lamps should then be put out, and not dimmed. If one is going to use a dimmer on the head lamps, the wing lights should be small. This also applies to the use of dipping head lamps, which we believe to be the best solution of the dazzle problem up-to-date.

To re-arrange the instruments as suggested in Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}4/BM41022., would be difficult and untidy, since the clock will not move more towards the near side without a deeper board, and the instrument board brackets themselves rather complicate matters.

We therefore do not feel this scheme to be advisable except as a last resource. The proper place for the dimmer switch is in the main switch box as this would prevent the coachbuilders having to interfere with our wiring.
