1487. EXPERIMENTAL DEPARTMENT. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/CTS.{C. Trot Salt - Carburation}8/JH. 10th September. 1938. The S.U. Carburetter Co.Ltd., Adderley Park, Birmingham.8. For the attention of Mr. Cooper. Dear Sirs, We thank you for your letter of Sept. 8th and note that you have no standard banjo connection to suit ¼" (outside) drain piping. Although we agree with you that a full bore flood is a very rare occurance, our policy of fitting the particular drain pipe dates back to the early days of our 3½ litre Bentley, when a very serious fire occured on a customers car due to such a flood, and the proximity of the spark plugs. As you know, a thing like that only has to happen once. The actual necessity of going to a larger drain pipe can best be explained as follows :- When high pressure pumps are used, and the float chambers are empty, the petrol comes in with such a rush, that air and vapour is not released through the said drain quick enough, and in consequence, petrol is momentarily forced over the top of the jet. When the float chambers are full, everything is O.K. but the effect on first starting up with almost empty floatchambers causes uncomfortable hunting due to the extra rich mixture. On going through the lists of our own standard parts, we find that we have a banjo connection to suit this particular job. CONT'D.{John DeLooze - Company Secretary} | ||
