To BJ. from R.{Sir Henry Royce} c. to OY. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} +8992 R9/M29.4.27. PHANTOM ENGINE. X. 8770 X. 8994 X8992 This engine on 7-EX and its accessories worked with great satisfaction during my stay in France, when it travelled 10,000 miles, at high and low speeds. The covered car, with load, would do well over 80 m.p.h. on a good level road and no head wind. We are however making modifications with the following views - To make the engine lighter, less liable to detonate with higher compression, to obtain more power at all speeds, and to maintain its torque at higher speeds, and to avoid some of the very small noises which are more liable to occur on this type of engine than on the Silver Ghost. The object of saving weight is to slightly improve riding and steering qualities of the car. Incidentally it will increase the acceleration, which will be still more manifest with a slightly increased compression and greater M.E.P. There will be considerable modifications to the tools for producing the crankchamber, cyl. block, but most of the units - pistons, connecting rods, crankshaft, etc., we do not expect to change.
