R.R. 235 A (150 H) (V.V. 585. 23.2.14) G.{Mr Griffiths - Chief Accountant / Mr Gnapp} 0363. C O P Y. xP522 To Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} from R.{Sir Henry Royce} R6/P16. 3. 14. With reference to 2704, we find the side shaft in this gear box very tight, which naturally makes it very noisy when running free. We fear this is often a fault caused by Mr. Platford's anxiety that they shall not have the slightest back lash. I do not remember finding any trouble with a slight clearance in the teeth of these gears. Tight gears may result in spoiling the ball bearings. (Sgd). R.{Sir Henry Royce} This side shaft has gone very silent by draining out the oil that was in the box, and refilling it with thinner oil, mostly engine oil. (Sgd). F.H.R. | ||
