R.{Sir Henry Royce} With reference to Mr. Royce's note - R6/P16.3.14. - re the side shaft on 2704 being very silent by refilling the box with thinner oil, we have tried several gear boxes on these lines, and have met with a good deal of success; in fact, we have only had one real failure out of 4 or 5 boxes tried. Thinner oil does seem to improve our side shaft. Mr. Platford is also agreed on this point, so far as he has gone. We are going to go much further with it, and find out just what is the best oil for this job. We are also following Mr. Royce's advice, and have been doing for sometime, of making our gears slacker. This has also been a benefit to us, it has stopped quite a lot of "sing" in our gears. | ||
