To DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} } FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} c. to CJ. RG.{Mr Rowledge} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} X5940 SECRET. R5/M15.4.25. INDIA. PIVOTS FOR FRONT BRAKES. X.5420 X.5940 I am surprised that Derby made the error of cutting out the radius but perhaps it is fortunate, as we shall now make a good job of the weak spot - (1) Either your large radius, or my through boss will do. (2) I somewhat fear the wings may get overstressed in sheer and so start a crack. Perhaps they should be cut away and carry none of the torque: test some of the poor specimens both ways. (3) If studs are used a hollow central dowel could be used. It would be easier fitted than the key. We might lighten the centreof the square section and the lever. (4) One thinks that these levers should be made nearly permanent with the stub axle, and if so the stud nuts could be locked by plate washers. (5) A large dia. hole could be used to lighten the [symbol of circle in square] section and pass through the centre of the lever taking away a lump of useless metal. In this .5 or .6 hole a tubular dowel could be fitted. Don't forget the wings crack. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
