REAR BRAKE SQUEAKS. X.4259 X.4257 Herewith we send N.sch.1975., of which we have sent a print to R.{Sir Henry Royce} and which is the proposed lightened squeak damper on the lines of the experimental set you have in Derby. We make out that these should be about half as much as yours in weight, and it may be this lightness will spoil their effectiveness as dampers. If we could have 2 splits instead of 4 it would reduce the number of parts but we are doubtful whether it would be joined to the brake drum sufficiently closely to stop squeaks unless it were pulled up in 4 places. We suggest that the 2 should be tried. When we come to the wide India brakes it may be necessary to make the damper wider, or the narrow one may be sufficient. We suggest that the latter should be tried on the wide brake drums. We expect that R.{Sir Henry Royce} will have some comments to make on this question of squeaks, and as far as we are concerned we are not very enthusiastic about this big damper.
