X.4056. In reply to BY3/PS1.5.20, we are in receipt of the following information from Jonas Woodhead & Sons Ltd. The number of rear springs of the old design which they have in progress and which are nearing completion is:- 100 1800 lbs. 6 2200 lbs. 2 2400 lbs. Last night Woodheads despatched to us by passenger train six springs with special points, to our blueprint No. 343 and the wood models sent in connection with our letter of the 4th ult. These are as follows:- 4 1900 lbs. 2 2000 lbs. These have been sent without point clips, as the clips could not be got ready in time. Woodheads are pushing on with the four sample springs with parallel square ended leaves with rounded corners, two of which will be tapered similar to our drawing "N" scheme 363, and the other two draw out to a feather edge and they are doing all in their power to have these ready for collection on Friday next, 4th. inst. In addition, they have taken in hand two springs of this pattern, one 1800 lbs. and one 1900 lbs. and they will get these through as speedily as possible. Woodheads inform us that the amount of material already cut to length is sufficient for approximately 1000 to 1500 rear springs and this material can be made up into springs with tapered sheared leaves, or parallel square ended leaves with rounded corners, without inconvenience or delay, but if we ultimately adopt thinner plates, considerable delay will be unavoidable and any plates which are then in stock will have to be scrapped.
