Coverley - Production Engineer} N.Sch.4705 - Modified Bevel Pinion Driving Taper - J.3. Rear Axle for 20/25 HP. In response to a request from Experimental Department N.Sch.4705 has been prepared showing the slower (1 in 8) driving taper on the bevel pinion of the J.3. rear axle for the 20/25 HP. car, required for the next 10,000 miles test. This modification is only necessary when this axle is used with the large bore 20/25 HP. unit, since the original J.3. pinion driving taper can transmit a torque which bears the same relation to the maximum low gear torque of the production 20/25 HP. unit, as the Bentley pinion torque bears to the low gear torque on production cars. The modified taper can transmit approximately 3-1/3 times the torque of the original taper. The provision for oil retaining at this point has also been brought into line with the latest Phantom 3 practice.
