Hypoid Rear Axle - N.Sch's 4462, 4471, and 4506. It is very important that we should press on with the above experiment, with a view to securing early standardisation of the hypoid axle on the 20/25 chassis. It will be remembered that such an axle has run an endurance test on 21-G-4 chassis, but that it started the test noisy and has finished in the same condition. The gears fitted to this axle were dug out from some old experimental stock as we could not afford to wait for new gears from Gleason. They, therefore, do not represent the standard of quietness that we should obtain, and we know by experience that it is no use judging one axle in this way. It should be remembered that this design is practically identical with the SpectreCodename for Phantom III both as regards the construction and dimensions, so that it can be said to be well tested on this larger chassis. This axle will also be wanted for the large bore 20/25 for which it should be amply strong. It is understood that further sets of gears are on order, but we should like to have agreement to putting in hand half a dozen of these axles at once which LA.{L. A. Archer} suggests could be fitted to trials cars, and possibly to Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}'s and Wor{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager}'s cars, as we are rather badly off for experimental 20/25's. It is hardly necessary to add that the standardisation of the hypoid axle should save us a lot of time and money at present being lost in changing and quietening the present standard axle, which is difficult to make satisfactory with the present type of coachwork, and to the present high standard of silence.
