To HPS.{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr} from Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/AFM.{Anthony F. Martindale} Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/AFM.{Anthony F. Martindale}4/MH.{M. Huckerby}29.12.37. RELINING BRAKES - ALL CARS. New linings, no matter what make, swell when they are first heated. This increase of thickness may be anything up to .030". As the normal clearance is rather less than this, you will appreciate that unless due allowance is made for this initial swelling, seizure may result. This happens periodically on our cars, the latest example being 3.B.IV. Will you please arrange to send cars out of the shop with the brakes, both front and rear, two notches out of adjustment. When the brakes have settled down we can adjust them normally in the garage. The loss of lining life is quite unimportant. This is the custom in the Repair Dept. where cars are delivered to customers with very little running. In the Test Dept. this procedure is not necessary as the cars do 70 miles before they leave the Works and the danger period is over. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/AFM.{Anthony F.
