The effect of temperature is shown in fig III C. There appear to be optimum temperatures for the lowest coeff. of friction. These experiments were made by heating an entire steering box. The effect of pressure feed of the oil (Fig IV) was tried by filling the hollow worm with oil under pressure of 25 lbs/□". The oil escaped with the threads through the oil-holes in the worm. It was not possible to get the nut to tighten upon stick. The quick motion or "joggling condition" was also rendered much freer. | ||
