| WORM AND NUT TESTS. X8430 (1) The type of curves obtained are shown in figs I & II. Nothing was found experimentally to indicate a variation of the coeff. of friction with the load, up to a load as high as 3,500 lbs. This justified drawing straight lines through the experimental values to obtain the average slope. The method of calculating the coeff. of friction and the efficiency are shown behind each curve. The two types of motion considered were the extreme figures obtainable for: 1) Sticking after steady turning slowly in one direction. 2) Flooded lubrication after rapid reversals of direction. Collected and averaged results for various oils are shown in Tables, together with the order of preference for oils as revealed by rig tests. | ||
