PHANTOM III. OVEROILING.

In view of the success obtained by Br.{T. E. Bellringer - Repair Manager} on chassis 3.CP.104 and LA.{L. A. Archer} on several production chassis with regard to overcoming overoiling troubles by using the tappet filter banjo screws with one .075 dia. hole in each, (Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}475) in place of the present two .156 dia. holes, will you please issue a Depot Sheet to cover this job.

It has been found that by the restriction to the rocker supply, the main pressure is automatically higher and in the region of 40 lbs/sq.in. at high speeds against the standard figure of 30 lbs/sq.in. This has been corrected by removing the main pressure spring E.87825 and substituting a low pressure spring E.87831 in its place and should be included on the Depot Sheet. This means that the main pressure and low pressure springs in the relief valve are identical (E.87831).

A standardisation sheet is also being issued to incorporate this modification on production. Other details concerning this are included in our original report Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Swdl.{Len H. Swindell}10/JH. 26.11.37, together with instructions that a note be added in the Instruction Book to examine the banjo screw holes for being clear at the same time as the tappet filer is examined for being dirty.

Either of these would bring up tappet noise through lack of oil when choked up.
