RE GOSHAWK II.

DYNAMO FAILURES. X4383 X4333

"We found that the dynamo on 6-Goshawk-II was not chargeable and on examination found the commutator smothered with dust from the Morganite brushes. The Le Carbone brushes on 4/5 Goshawk-II were in excellent condition when we examined them. The Le Carbone brushes were in excellent condition and no wear hardly had taken place. I think we have gote to be very certain of our ground before departing from Le Carbone, because R is confident they are the best. They had some trouble with 5-Goshawk-II dynamo not charging and the only thing we found wrong was that the spring pressing on to the brushes was fouling the nut. Re-setting the spring, so as to allow pressure on to the brushes, cured this fault."

We have also experienced the faulty brush contact trouble on 7-Goshawk-II at the Works, and the point has been taken up by EFC.

We feel that some alteration is required to these brush holders so as to allow full range of wear of the brushes. We also feel that longer brushes might be considered an advantage in overcoming this trouble.

According to the Expl. Dept. records, there is only one Morganite brush on 6-Goshawk-II dynamo which is the control brush and this brush is reduced in width so as to improve the efficiency as suggested by EFC. and approved by R.{Sir Henry Royce} We rather feel that the Le Carbone brushes are somewhat more noisy than the Morganite and we have asked Hy.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} and Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} to comment on such.

We have also received a report from Hy.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} that the commutator on 6-Goshawk-II dynamo has burst.
(Handwritten note: Taken up)

R.{Sir Henry Royce} complains that the cover for the dynamo cannot be removed.
