FOR THE ATTENTION OF MR. MATTHEWS: Dear Mr. Matthews, I thank you for your letter of the 31st.ult., with reference to the special rings which were made to your request. We have to say that the rings were counter-bored before finishing, our operations being as follows:- After counter-boring the rings were closed up in a jig giving the same gap as the finished diameter, lapped on the sides or ground and then finished on the diameter. We did this in order to remove the twist due to the unequal forces exerted by the ring. Apparently, we have destroyed the principle that you were desirous of testing, and in accordance with your letter we have put replacement rings in hand and will finish them in accordance with your instructions, i.e. finish the "L" section after the rings are completely machined. We shall be obliged if you will let us have your covering order for the rings as enumerated in your letter. Assuring you of our best attention, Yours faithfully, Hepworth & Grandage Ltd.
