Dear Sirs, We are in receipt of yours of the 30th ult. regarding our Galometer and Measuring Autovac. The reason for the Non-Return Valve being fitted is that in addition to preventing petrol running back to the main tank it also cuts the delivery of petrol off at a definite point. Without this valve a certain amount of petrol would flow into the inner chamber after the suction being cut off, owing to the velocity of the petrol flow. Regarding the functioning of Autovac when outer chamber is empty, this has not had too great a bearing on our experiments, as on the majority of cars the Autovac will feed petrol faster than the engine consumes it. The first function when the inner chamber is empty takes in more petrol than the ordinary functions. We have for a considerable time been running a Galometer and Measuring Autovac on one of our Rolls-Royce Cars and have obtained results within 3%. Of course we have a large outer chamber which carries a fair reserve and under these conditions the petrol level is kept high enough to cover the Drop Valve and therefore the conditions you mention do not occur.
