20/25 HP. Tank Engines.

Colonel Fell was up here on the 24th inst. with two representatives of the War Office, and left us with a scheme of the modifications required by the Signals Department to the screening of the Tank engines.

Firstly the use of an earthing fork at the sparking plug end of the wiring instead of the pigtail normally employed. The sparking plugs if necessary will be supplied by the W.O.

Secondly, a modification to the top of the cover over the L.T. make and break and H.T. moulding, completely shutting in the aperture through which the conductors pass, and also separately clamping each conductor.

Thirdly, completely enclosing the aperture and clamping the cable where it passes into the top of the coil screening.

Fourthly, enclosing the terminal on the side of the coil casing by means of a sheet metal cover.

We informed the W.O. representatives that we would look into this matter and see what modifications were required if necessary to the scheme they submitted, and that the cost of these modifications would have to be covered by an amendment to contract.

Another request put forward was that the dynamo and starter motor covers should be made stiffer and stronger than the somewhat thin aluminium ones normally fitted as the latter soon become damaged.

We agreed that these covers would be supplied in steel, and it was understood that any extra charge resulting from same should be made in amendment to contract prices.

The abovementioned modifications to the screening have arisen as the result of actual tests by the Signals Corps. in the field on Light Tanks fitted with RR. engines.

E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer}
