We are receiving complaints that new chassis develop rattles after a few miles running on the road, which is stated to be due to excessive end play in the spring shackles. As far as possible we have been taking action for some time to try and turn out the cars with this end play reduced to a minimum. We feel, however, that the point is not receiving proper attention during erection. I should be glad therefore if you will give instructions for the following points to receive attention :- 1. The side play in the spring shackles should be correct to drawing. 2. The surfaces taking up the end play should have good surface bedding and should not bed locally so as to allow side play to soon develop so as to cause rattles when the car has been in service for a short time.
