Y4553a To Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} From G.W.H. Hotel de France. Chateauroux. Indre. 10.8.33. I. S. IV. We have received your memo Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}9/KT.8.8.33. J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} Fisher Arrived late last night with the axle tube etc. He landed at Paris at 5.30 A.M., but did not get through the customs until 2.30 in the afternoon. He is examining the axle to make sure nothing else is showing any sign of failure, before fitting up the new tube. We note your remarks re brake shoes. We shall therefore refit the alum. shoes to the front, after having had a run. We cannot change over as yet whilst the rear axle is out. RE PUMPS We are fitting the two pumps on the cross member front end of Battery box. They will be between the battery box and the frame. the two way petrol tap is fitted in close proximity to the pumps. One pipe line then runs along the frame to the filter. All is easy of access and should be kept much cooler. The autoflux petrol pump manufactures insist upon their pump being fitted away from the engine and as near to the petrol tank as possible. The Autoflux pump is a very fine neat job. It has a glas filter container attached. A case containing necessary spares is supplied. It is the most complete job I have seen. We are not of course in the position to state its output as yet, but I hesitate to fit the S.U. until a test of this pump has been made. We hope to resume our mileage Friday noon. RE THE EXHAUST SYSTEM Up to the present mileage we have had no failure of any unit of the exhaust system. That is since the fitting of the new front expansion chamber. The lagging was taken off this chamber before it was fitted, the reason being that Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} and myself after seeing the tendancy of scaling with the first box agreed that its life would be short if lagged.
