To R.{Sir Henry Royce} from Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} c. to BJ. Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} c. to RG.{Mr Rowledge} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. to DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} EX. ORIGINAL X7420 Y235 EAC-V11 BRAKING. We have carried out tests with rear brake drums stiffened up to give them the same effective rigidity as the present rear drums on EAC.Vlll. The result is a definite reduction in sponginess of the brake pedal under violent application. However the system is not yet as rigid as that on the present Phantom. This is undoubtedly partially due to the rear spring twist of the brake torque. As the direct rear braking is already the minimum, further improvement would appear to be limited to stiffening up the rear direct brake linkage if it is feasible. As at present arranged the rear axle has a decided tendency to dance about the road when making a rapid stop; we are fitting Hartfords as well as hydraulics to the rear to note the effect of increased damping on this feature.
