E H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} #35 A (150 H) (V.V. 522. 10.2.14) G.{Mr Griffiths - Chief Accountant / Mr Gnapp} 0345. . X632 X/63 RE CYLINDER BORER. J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} for R.{Sir Henry Royce} 18.4.14. M1/G18414. We are holding this work up so that we can proceed with the Gear Box Silence Test. We are, therefore, sending you a blue of the No.1 Head, as far as we have gone with it. Each shaft bearing is to be supplied with its own quantity of oil. The gears are to run in an oil bath. The depth of oil to be such that it is just below the main spindle, so that it is in direct contact with the felts in the split bearings. The method of actuating drawbar for cutters, is similar to that used on Cleveland. The working of the head we understand is, to take a roughing cut with one cutter - idle return stroke - change cutter - fin- ishing cut with keener cutter. We wondered if it was possible to use two cutters one inside the other, the outer cutter to rough on the outward travel and the inner cutter (which is to be moved forward while the outer is moved back) is to finish on the return stroke.
