To M.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore} from R.{Sir Henry Royce} Copy to J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} Copy to Wor{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager}, Copy to Na.{Mr Nadin} RE CYLINDER BORER. With reference to the Cylinder Boring Machine, and the No. 3 chambering head for the above, I want you to particularly look out to see, whether you have got the following correct:- 1. Are the spindles the correct distance apart for the Northcliffe engine, which appears to be 5'5" centres, 2. Do the adjusting screws for the orbits of the planetary shafts stop in a convenient position for adjustment. On looking over the drawing I see you have very large masses of cast iron, which I think is not wise. I should equal these out to more uniform thickness. Possibly bushing the ends if necessary. We do not want massive solid pieces of metal, which generally cast porous. The metal should be some uniform thickness such as from ¾" to 1" thick. I have been talking this matter over with Mr Elliott and Mr Olley, and we have come to the conclusion that it would be better if possible, if instead of having three heads we had five heads, and instead of four positions six positions. The following would be the process:- | ||
