-9- on Castor oil for two hours, the appearance of them is like new; but if we run on Mineral oil there is definite signs of wear and tearing of the teeth. Since we have run into our trouble we have made enquiries with other manufacturers and we find that they have had rather similar experience. That is, they have started off, after having run a type test satisfactorily on Mineral oil, but they found when they tried to run new engines on Mineral oil they had considerable difficulty. They have now got over their trouble by running all engines for a considerable time on Castor oil before they run them on Mineral oil. We are trying various compounded oils but so far have not obtained any results equal to Castor oil. The "R" engines for Sir Henry Segrave's boat are now about to be delivered. We are able to obtain 1800 HP. at 2850 R.P.M. without the help of the air intake effect. The s/c gears have been modified to give us the extra boost. The S.6 machine has been flying again at Felixstowe. It was noticeable that we have had serious trouble with petrol building up in the blower. This did not occur at Calshot, the reason being that the air temperature was much warmer at that time The new carburetters in the "Vee" are actually being type tested by the A.I.D. at Derby. We have had considerable difficulty in getting each of the four carburetters to perform consistently but we believe that now our troubles are over. We have recently run another type test on a | ||
