-8- With our present gear-boxes we have very silent gears, so that, actually to the man who sits in the back of the car he will get no better ride. We have got to be ready with something, but I am not convinced that the advantage which is gained is worth much if it is increased cost and weight. As regards the left-hand chassis which E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} and myself are bringing out to France. This is fitted with a body similar to 18-EX and has most of the features on the car which were agreed to at Verey's Restaurant before you left England. We have had an insistent demand for bigger output from the dynamo. On this car E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} and EFC, have arranged a scheme for double charge, the full charge coming on when the headlamps are switched on. On the aero engine side we have been getting on very well. Perhaps the biggest 'snag' we have come up against is the fact that after we had carried out 100 hours test on "F" and "H" engines successfully with P.4 mineral oil, we now find that our air-screw reduction gears will not stand up with Mineral oil. The difference shewn up on Castor oil and Mineral oil with these gears is remarkable. On the bearings and other parts one has to be very critical and then are not very certain as regards the difference between Castor and Mineral oil, but on the reduction gears if we take a new set of gears and run them | ||
