----------
Replying to your memo Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}7/MJ.1.3.35 concerning new design work, we comment as follows:-

(1) Improved supercharger drive for Merlin engines.

Issued 14/3/35. We are about to issue a modification for the expanded centres design substituting a roller bearing for the plain bearing which has failed. It is understood that BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} is supplying particulars for adapting the Merlin "C" blower drive to the Merlin "B" engine.

(2) Improved supercharger drive for 750 HP. Kestrel with Ramp Head.

31/3/35 We are putting in hand a design for this following on the improvement to the Merlin.

(3) New design of piston for Merlin, based on Kestrel and Goshawk.

14/3/35 The present Merlin pistons have the central rib and are arranged for the short gudgeon pin boss, but otherwise follow standard practice. Further information is required on the deficiencies of the existing design.

(4) Modifications to Merlin lower half crankcase.

14/3/35. { (a) Deeper scavenge pipe well. Design in hand.
{ (b) More clearance for drainage oil at front end. -do-
{ (c) Larger scavenge pipe. -do-
28/3/35. { (d) 20% larger scavenge pumps. Completed by BY Not Drg.
{ (e) Provision for still larger scavenge pumps. Being investigated.
