PHANTOM 111 - REAR BRAKES.

At present the proposal to fit a common hand and foot brake to Phantom 111 rear is mixed up with the 14 aluminium drums on 39-EX. It seems unlikely that anything serious will be done with aluminium drums, and it seems a pity to lose this very valuable economy and weight saving improvement on Phantom 111. We suggest that it would be worth while preparing a scheme for the common hand and foot brake, with 16" C.I. drums and steel shoes. We believe Experimental Dept. would not have the objection to this that they have to C.I. drums and aluminium shoes. The steel shoes could be forgings or castings or alternatively they might work out in the bent rolled T. section if we found we could use narrow bearings for the shoe fulcrums and toggle bearings. It is suggested that the job would not be a long one.

It may to some extent have been forgotten that EAC.1 was fitted with common hand and foot brake shoes to N.Sch.1396 and was we believe a considerable success, the life of the rear brake being very long.
