Messrs. The Hoffmann Manufacturing Co. Ltd.,

ESSEX.

For the attention of C.H.Smith, Esq.

Dear Sirs,

As arranged during our telephone conversation of 25th. Feb. we have been investigating the reasons for our Production Dept's complaint about steering roller preloads.

We believe that the following is an accurate account of the relevant history of this job.

On 22/9/37 you sent us 22 assemblies N.2784 which were very satisfactory apart from 6 which were above the top limit of 12 ozs. at 3" for preload. You visited us shortly after we received these rollers and it was agreed verbally that it would be better for you to work nearer the lower limit of preload as, should a small percentage be below this limit, we could easily correct them.

On 9/12/37 you sent us a further 20 assemblies all of which were perfectly satisfactory.

On 7/2/38 you sent us a batch of 18 assemblies. One of these was within the limit of 6 - 12 ozs. at 3". The majority of the remainder had zero preload. These rollers had labels attached to them marked "no end movement" or "0.0002 end movement". We enclose one of these labels. Our works corrected these rollers as they were pressed for supplies and our Order Office complained to you about the preload. We also received recently 4 assemblies N.2790 which had labels marked "no end movement". Upon inspection
