X8150 RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} C BY/SS.{S. Smith} BY10/H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} 12.10.26. GLAND PACKINGS. We supplied the Experimental Dept. some months ago with gland packings made from cork. The various glands dealt with were numbered:- E.72046. E.53279. E.74869. I would like to know whether we ever fitted these cork glands to any water pumps, and if so, what has been the result. Whilst dealing with this matter of pump glands, I would like to raise the question of the Phantom as a particular case. We have been having complaints fairly steadily up to a point when I over-came same, apparently, for the time at least, by making the outer gland ineffective to a certain extent, as a gland, by cutting three grooves internally, to enable the oil to pass the gland to lubricate the out-board bearing. This scheme is of course merely a make-shift, and entirely wrong. I am raising it because we have on test two or three different designs for modifying the glands which should entirely cut out the trouble. This particular experiment should be kept very much alive, and not permitted to die out, as I am certain we are not out of trouble on this particular issue. BY.{R.W.
