3. The coupling therefore could not work properly and with the pump slightly out of line the effect was apparently to draw the impeller spindle forward.

Whether this is the explanation or not the impeller has pressed forward (i.e. away from the water intake) and has come in contact with the forward side of the water-pump casing, causing wear and squeaking between the impeller and the casing.

We are freeing up the coupling by shortening the spindles in the correct manner (as on Silver Ghost) and shall run the same pump for further mileage. If there is still a tendency for the impeller to move forwards we propose to put about a 20° r.h. spiral on the blades so as to give them a tendency to draw backwards against the stop.

4. Bearings.
The white metal bearings showed practically no wear. This is all the more remarkable because of the error in mounting the Oldham coupling.

This suggests that the complaints of the White Metal running out on imported Phantoms is due to the owners not having lubricated the latter.
