84004 TO BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from ROY.{Sir Henry Royce} c. to Nor. [Struck through] c. to RG{Mr Rowledge} c. to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} ---------- ROY{Sir Henry Royce}5/MG31.5.32 ---------- The use of RR-50 Alloy Pistons in our own Engines, in place of Y Alloy The question has been discussed on many occasions over the past few years, but it has not been found possible hitherto to standardise such RR-50 Pistons, due to various Type Tests having failed, etc. etc. We shall be placing orders for the necessary Pistons for 19 Buzzard Engines shortly, and the object of this note is to ask if we shall now be safe in using our own Alloy, i.e. RR-50, for such Pistons, in place of our present standard Y Alloy. In conversation with Mr. Devereux, I understood practically all the Aero Engine suppliers in this country are now using RR-50 for their Pistons, as they have found by actual experience it is better for their purpose than Y Alloy, and they have had no difficulty whatever in agreeing its use with the Air Board.
