TO DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} SECRET. R1/M5.4.24. Copy to - CJ. HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} A.{Mr Adams} C. LONGITUDINAL STEERING TUBE. X9450 X N. SCHEME 1778. Fitting this with slightly set up springs and ample clearance is urgent. I think we must make production tubes unslotted in the end so that we must have the ball without collar. I propose we make the ends with ½" travel from normal and test both ends so fitted, and one only to find if ½" enough or 1" needed. I believe leather gaiters are the only ones practical and we might make them for ½" movement each way if we corrugated by pressing wet and sewing, or make from washers. They only move the extreme distance/occasionally. Could we not make cover cap removable for adjustment without undoing main cap and so working in the dark. Single spring preferred.
