EXPERIMENTAL REPORT. (2)

Expl. No. REF Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/LG30.3.25.

COMPLAINTS.
Controls rattle in steering column.
Oil leak from drive for dynamo.
Cup leather on governor relay was found charred which prevented ignition relay from working correctly.
Water pump loose in its bracket.
Side steering tube springs breaking.
Oil consumption excessive.
Wear on controls.
Clutch trunnion sleeve seizing on its shaft.
Failure of rear exhaust manifold.

MODIFICATION INSTRUCTED.
This is a complaint which we frequently have on the 40/50.
Modification to overcome this has been instructed for all cars.
This fault had already been discovered on the test engines and the cup leathers have been changed from oak-tan to chrome-tan leathers. This is supposed to be reliable under the temperature conditions which exist.
98-NK started with a leather washer which perished - a metal washer is now instructed for all cars.
Two side steering tube springs which failed (F.71401) were weaker than std. 40/50 - they have the advantage of reducing road shocks transmitted to the steering wheel, but the tendency for steering wobbles is increased and they are liable to break. The EAC. std. production are instructed with 40/50 type springs in the side steering tube.
New piston in which each ring acts as a scraper has been instructed for all cars.
On the whole the wear on controls is not excessive. The slight modifications which may be necessary should not cause any delay. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} will be instructing these.
The trouble with this was probably due to the engine becoming out of line.
This was probably caused by insufficient clearance to allow for expansion. Although there was sufficient clearance in the dowel hole, the flange on the exhaust manifold had fouled the stud for the clamp.

All the modifications mentioned have been agreed to in CJ1/M13.3.25.
