Your Ref.- ROY{Sir Henry Royce}10/MG12.10.28. 5th November 1928.

Messrs. Rolls-Royce Ltd.,

DERBY.

Dear Sirs,

In reply to your letter of October 12th. we beg to say that the contact breaker returned from E.W.6 Magneto No.100081 has apparently been damaged by petrol or petrol vapour entering the cam cage; the parts being covered with a carbon deposit caused by combustion, occurring apparently inside the cam cage.

We note that the magneto is used on an experimental car and would suggest an investigation as to the cause of the petrol or vapour reaching the magneto because it evidently does not exist on the standard engines in production, as if it were so every magneto would be affected very rapidly, and we have not found any trace of this trouble on any magneto returned to us.

The only way of overcoming the difficulty by modification to the magneto would be to ventilate the cam cage and this would cause the operation of the contact breaker to be much more distinctly audible.

We shall be pleased to hear from you further when you have made the investigation suggested and in the meantime we are retaining the contact breaker in its present condition, so that you may, if you wish, examine it again in view of our report as to the cause of this condition.

Yours faithfully,
For and on behalf of

NORTH & SONS LD.
C.H.Kirby.
DIRECTOR.
