RE : Ian T. Nelson Esq. - Chassis 37-WJ.

In accordance with D/BP/WG{Mr Gill - Financial Director}16/WS27.6.31, tests have been made on this battery for excessive gassing and our findings and recommendations are as follows :-

It is assumed that the battery is approx.
19 - 20 months old. When received, the battery was practically dry and discharged probably as a result of treatment before despatch. The terminals and links were in a very corroded condition. Brass washers are fitted under the links and in most cases these had practically disappeared through the effects of corrosion.

Lead washers are now fitted as standard to overcome this trouble. Leakage was found between neighbouring cells, this is probably due to the compound coming away from the cell partitioning walls and require resealing. The accumulator has a good capacity, holds its charge well and cadmium readings shew the plates to be in good condition electrically.

The only conclusion to arrive at is that some metallic substance (impurity) has got into the cells which will cause excessive gassing. Changing of the electrolyte has failed to make any improvement and every test has been made except the stripping down of the battery.

We recommend that this battery be sent to the makers for their investigation and report. If they overcome the excessive gassing and consider the battery useful for further service, they should fit new lead terminal post washers and new connecting links where necessary and also eliminate the cell to cell leakage.

If necessary, the battery can be treated to be sent in a dry condition. Will By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} please instruct the electrical laboratory if this is to be done.
