X/5/33 To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} From G.W.H. Hotel de France. Chateauroux. Indre. 28.7.33 I B IV Re boiling of Petrol During yesterday's intense heat we carried out further tests with the petrol system as fitted at Derby. This failed completely in five minutes with a water temperature of 80° and oil at 80°. We fitted the short pipe cutting out the petrol tap and filter, with the same results that we obtained on the road. No definate drying up, a momentarily fluttering and then O.K. We then lagged the short petrol pipe to the pump with asbestos, the result being that we could not obtain any failure of any kind. The engine was very hot, water boiling, oil temperature 90°. We started the engine up, and stopped, started up again without any signs of failure. - - - - - - - - To-day we are moving the position of the filter and trying other tests. We are also fitting the front silencer sent out. We have fitted a thermometer for the water temperatures We shall try the by-passing of the thermostat later. HYDRAULIC DAMPERS We are having to make fresh joints of the gland cap faces. The two bolt job is not satisfactory with the weak castings. GWHancock. G.W.H. | ||
