To Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} ) From Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} ) c. to wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}6/KT.4.3.31. Handwritten: γ S20 SHOCK DAMPER P.2. X.7520. X.235. With reference to Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}2/M2.3.31. The only one of the existing dampers in which the split piston can be utilised is the P.II rear. We recommend that we at once take advantage of the piston and intermediate lever shewn in N. sch.3225 as it is at least one way in which we can forestall potential complaints. At the same time it will give us service experience of a principle which is to be incorporated in any new damper. We suggest that any unmachined inter-levers or pistons for P.II. rear dampers should be held up while we test out those shewn on N. sch.3225. We have been running something almost exactly similar on the Bump and it shews every promise of being satisfactory once the correct materials for the rubbing pads have been decided upon. It will be observed that having done this we are still left with 75% of our dampers in production to which we can fit no split piston which is the vital improvement. The quickest course would be to tell us how to fit this good P.II rear damper that we have to the front and rear of the 25.HP. and the front of the P.II. The 25 HP. seems a straight forward proposition. We are asking R.{Sir Henry Royce} to let you do this so that we have a tested and proved damper to carry on with whilst we are proving out the relative merits of the vertical and horizontal new designs.
