Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} X5400 To By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} re 20/25. Luggage Grids and Wheel Carriers. Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}15/E17.12.30 X5400 X5600 Copy to Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Cxr Referring to DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/EV{Ivan Evernden - coachwork}1/M12.12.30 when we looked at 18-G-4 at W. we were struck by the fact that the appearance of the car was spoilt by the large spare wheel carrier on the near side which has to be there on all 20/25's which have a luggage grid because, in order to use the luggage grid, the spare wheel has to be dismounted from the back and fitted to the side. A second disadvantage of this scheme is that in very many cases, once this has been done, the chauffeur or owner does not trouble to put it back at the rear of the car. This is a state of affairs which has existed far too long and I took the matter up with WW with a view to having an arrangement which was at least as good as that now on the Phantom II whereby you can use the luggage grid without disturbing the wheel. I am very anxious that this new scheme should be completed and tested in order to enable it to be incorporated in the next batch of material which we have to sanction, as it would be regrettable if we had to order more for the same arrangement as at present. I understand that the two schemes outlined in the DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/EV{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} memo. quoted are approximately 90% the same and that the grid uses many of the existing P.II parts so that in the long run economy from a production point of view should be effected. I should like to seeprints of both the N.Sch.3184 and N.Sch.3185. From a recent memo. from Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} in connection with the 10,000 mile test of 18-G-4 I gathered that the parts for this revised scheme cannot be completed in time to enable them to be tested on this car but that it is proposed to send another 20/25 for a 10,000 mile test very shortly with this and certain other features which were detailed in the Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} memo. referred to. I should like to hear that you do not anticipate any great difficulty in carrying out the above. Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} | ||
