ENDURANCE.
The pump was fitted with a complete set of new bearings, glands and shaft. With an increased spring pressure (30 lbs.) the unit was run for 15 hrs. (total running time). It was noticed that after approx. 10 hrs. that the glands were leaking but the pump was not stripped until the 15 hrs. run was completed. When examined the bearings and glands were found to be in excellent order. The shaft was very slightly scored but the amount of wear on the diameter was exceedingly small, almost unmeasureable. The same parts were refitted, and another 15 hrs. run was completed.
No leaks were observed during the second run, and when examined the parts were apparently unaltered.
When measured it was found that the shaft had not worn at all where the glands fitted, and had worn .00035" - .0005" where the middle whitemetal bush fitted.
