glands of this type (20 lbs. spring pressure) were quite satisfactory.

At the commencement of these tests the glands were satisfactory. Tests were taken later with glands formed in a similar manner to those used in the hydraulic shock absorber i.e. the ends cut square, and just short (approx. 1/8") of a complete number of turns. These were equally satisfactory.

When using the asbestos rope impregnated with graphite, 2 turns for the lower layer and 1 turn for the top layer were found to be sufficient due to the larger dia. of the material, instead of 4 and 3 as used with the original asbestos rope.

LUBRICANT.

These tests were commenced with Adcol as the lubricant, this being the standard practice. It was observed however, that this became hard when heated and then cooled. It was also noticed that it did not run freely out of the grease cup. Graphite was then used, and although this appeared to retain its nature under the varying temperatures, it was necessary to force it into the bearings.

'Yelludro' was the next lubricant tried. This melted and ran into the bearings, and when cold still retained soft greasy properties. This lubricant was used throughout the remaining tests.
