X3457 ROLLS-ROYCE OF AMERICA, INC. SPRINGFIELD, MASS. Oy2 - G 17221 To: Mr. Hives From: Mr. Olley Re: Back Axle Boxes These two forgings which were originally ordered from Vickers we think we shall now be able to obtain in the States from J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} Williams. We were originally instructed to buy these in mild steel, but by the time we had placed the order with Vickers, the material had been changed by Derby to nickel steel. As a matter of interest, I should like to know whether any breakage occurred on the mild steel forgings to justify the change to nickel steel, and whether you would consider at Derby that a mild steel forging was acceptable, as it will make a lot of difference inthe cost of the forgings, the life of the dies, etc. Will you please let me know this as soon as you can.
