'V' SERIES.

STEERING.

Replying to your Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}9/LG27.4.25., Mr. Royce in RL/M27.4.25. agrees to using the whitemetal nut and the roller bearings to carry on with until something definitely superior has been obtained as a result of the experiments we are now instructing. Would BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} therefore please issue instructions for these 2 improvements in case he has not already done so. Drawing N.sch.1981 is correct as regards the roller bearings the housings and the shaft, but so far, as the experiment has not been tried, we are not prepared to say that the Goshawk type nut shewn on that drawing should be adopted, and the correct thing to do is to use the previous cheeses and nut, the latter simply white-metalled.

For immediate production you will no doubt agree that the modifications shewn on N.sch.1983 which enables you to use the 10.5 centre distance on existing cars, is desirable, and we suggest that this should be done, but that when possible you should go back to 10.25 and obtain the better clearances in the box.
