CABLES FOR CHASSIS. "Maconite" is the trade name for a special insulating compound for electric cables, and is applied to such in various ways by the Macintosh Cable Co.Ltd., at Ashbourne Road Mills, Derby. In particular wires and cables are made up for many purposes with an insulating covering of pure Maconite only, or with pure Maconite covering with braiding. The Maconite material, although apparently composed very largely of rubber, is said by the makers to contain a smaller proportion of rubber than would be anticipated. It is claimed to have quite extraordinary properties in almost all directions, e.g.:- Mechanical strength; Resistance to chemicals; " " oils; " " heat; etc. etc. Without going into full details of the claims made for this material, it certainly does appear that these may be very largely confirmed by performing the necessary tests, and in this connection we attach a copy of my assistant's report WB.{Mr Brazier/Mr Bell}79, dealing with the results of a few tests which we ourselves have made on a sample cable submitted to us.
